Distinctive characters

Length: 17 cm
Weight: about 60 grams
Wingspan: 31 cm

It is recognized for its large metallic blue beak in summer and yellowish in winter. Very large head colored brown, brown also on the back and belly. Mask, throat and tip of the black wings. White wing bar. Female and young with less contrasting coloring. Young people have a yellow spot on the throat. The upright and hopping walk is typical.


The nest is cup-shaped and is built almost exclusively by the female on the trees with twigs, small roots, lichens. It lays 5 eggs on average. The male participates occasionally in hatching for 12-14 days. The young are fed by both parents and fly at the age of 10-14 days. There is only one brood per year.
It feeds on seeds of fleshy fruits, even on very hard kernels of cherries and peaches which it shatters with its large beak. It often moves in small groups. He lives in woods, parks and orchards. It nests on tree tops.
