Breeds of dogs: Sheepdog of Sarcophanin - Sarplaninac

Origin, classification and history

Origin: Serbia.
F.C.I classification: Group 2 - pinscher, schnauzer, molossoid and Swiss cattle dogs.

The Shepherd Dog of Ciarplanina (Yugoslavenski Ovcarski pas Sarplaninac) is the product of an excellent selection, widespread especially in Illyria, a region of ex-Yugoslavia along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The cradle of origin is however indicated as the mountainous buttresses on the border with Albania, from where it subsequently spread along the coastal strip. Moreover, the origins of this breed are very ancient; they must be traced back to those dogs from Asia, more precisely from Tibet, who accompanied the Asian peoples during their migrations to the West. These dogs settled along the way in various regions, thus becoming indigenous breeds. This breed was officially recognized by the F.C.I. in 1939 under the name of "Iliriski Ovcar", that is "Ilirian Shepherd Dog", but in 1957, at the request of the Yugoslav Cynological Federation, the General Assembly of the F.C.I., converted the name into the current one. The first breeder to breed the breed in Italy was Professor Ballotta.

General aspect

Large dog. Robust, heavily built, the size above average, well proportioned. Covered with long, thick hair, rather coarse which gives the body a more collected appearance. Strong constitution. The length of the body is slightly greater than the height at the withers: from 8 to 10% in males, from 10 to 12% in females.

Calm in temperament, with good character, he is a good defender despite not being excessively biting. Devoted to his master and incorruptible. Professor Ballotta describes him as a strong animal, resistant to the hardships that the shepherd's nomadic life entails, sober as any purebred mountaineer, does not fear the inclement weather and is tireless in the surveillance and search for sheep, who is ready to also defend against the aggression of the wolf and the bear. He does not hesitate to defend his master with all his might. He is suspicious of strangers and sometimes even aggressive. Very affectionate to the people of the house. Very intelligent and sufficiently obedient dog. It is an unassailable and intrepid dog. Reserved and loyal.
