Origin, diffusion and economic characteristics

Origin: Sweden

The Öländsk dvärghöna is a local poultry breed that has developed and adapted well to the barren environment of the Baltic Sea island of Öland.
Some studies attest to the origin of this animal in the northern part of the island, in the Petgärde and Asklunda villages.
It has long been believed that the island's dwarf chickens were descended from English dwarf chickens that arrived from Java in England in the 17th century. However, subsequent genetic studies indicate that this is not the case, but that they are breeding hens with dwarfism.
This breed is rarely used for meat, except for self-consumption, the inhabitants of the island of Öland love to consume especially its eggs.
