Type of protected area - Where it is located
Typology: Biotope; instituted with Resolution of the Provincial Council of 30.11.92 n. 18,945.
Region: Trentino-Alto Adige
The Biotopo Costa is located near the inhabited area of Brazzanighe, not far from Pergine Valsugana, at about 480 m altitude; occupies an area of 4 hectares.
Biotope Lago Costa
Lake Costa is a small body of water with an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, located in the water catchment area of the Fèrsina torrent. The modest size and the reduced depth (maximum 2 meters) humid it more like a pond than a real lake. It is fed by underground springs which are found mainly in the eastern part of the basin. The only inlet is temporary and comes from the Canzolino lake above, while the emissary, after a short journey through the cultivated fields, flows into the Fersina torrent. Its origin is due to the barrier of the small valley caused by alluvial materials deposited by Fersina during the floods.
This small biotope constitutes an important area of naturalistic interest, in a territory largely exploited for agricultural purposes.
Flora and fauna
The vegetation of the lake includes plants that live submerged (such as the water yarrow and the waxfly, while other plants are rooted on the muddy bottom but develop on the surface (Polygonum amphibium). The marsh vegetation consists of the straw of water and yellow daliris. On the banks there are small formations of cariceti and a portion of hygrophilous wood, with species such as the far black, the far white and the white willow.
In the lake, the fish fauna includes species of still waters, while in the emissary there is the rare Po Valley goby. Among the amphibians we find the green frog and the toad, while along the banks nest the mallard, the moorhen, the porciglione and the coot.
The provincial law (Autonomous Province of Trento) which established protected Biotopes (areas of significant naturalistic, scientific and cultural interest) is no. 14 of 23/06/1986. In 1987, 287 were identified: of these, 219 are defined as being of local interest and their establishment and management is the responsibility of the municipality (municipal biotopes); the 68 most important are instead classified of provincial interest (provincial biotopes), and are the responsibility of the Biotopes Office of the Parks and State Forests Service of the Province.
Information for the visit
