Luno the Ionian side of the Murge plateau branch out more or less parallel steep and deep valleys (ravines). In the province of Taranto alone there are more than 150 ravines, natural formations with unusual and exceptional characteristics. From the vegetational point of view, the ravines constitute true singularities, in that microclimatic nichias are formed in them which allow the survival of rare and endemic species.
The environment of the Reserve of the Eastern Murge is the characteristic one of the Murgia with outcropping limestone rocks and resulting soils. Vegetation consisting of coppice woods of Trojan oak, with the presence of the most representative species of the Mediterranean scrub and rocky pastures.

It delimits the area of Massafra on the western side, has an almost straight course and a length of 4 km and a depth varying between 12 and 40 meters. In the stretch near the inhabited center of Massafra the ravine shows strong signs of deterioration, in particular linked to the construction of new buildings immediately close to the edge. Inside, about 600 plant species have been registered. La Gravina is characterized by the presence of the largest, apart from the Sassi di Matera, a medieval rock village located around the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Scala.
